2008 | Piano and Wind Ensemble | Grade 5 | 10’- 15’ | Concerto, solo work
“Out Loud” by composer, pianist and recording artist Catherine Likhuta, is our Composition of the Week.
Out Loud (2008) is a concerto for piano and wind ensemble, commissioned by the Cornell University Wind Ensemble (Cynthia Johnston Turner, conductor). It is Likhuta’s first composition for wind ensemble, seeking to explore the medium within her compositional style. As opposed to other piano concerti, the ensemble’s role is not reduced to a mere accompaniment, but rather intended as a conversation or a musical argument with the soloist. “I wanted every note to be honest and sincere, like thinking out loud musically” hence the title of the work.
Catherine Likhuta holds a bachelor's degree in jazz piano from Kyiv Glière Music College and a five-year post-graduate degree in composition from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine (Kyiv Conservatory). She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in composition at the University of Queensland.
Her music exhibits high emotional charge, programmatic nature and rhythmic complexity. Catherine's works have been performed throughout North America, Europe and Australia by many prominent soloists and ensembles, such as Paul Dean, Peter Luff, The Australian Voices, U.S. Army Field Band Horns, Cornell University Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony, Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the National Radio of Ukraine. Her pieces have been played at several international events, including two international horn symposia and the World Saxophone Congress. Her concertino for five horns entitled “Hard to Argue” became the winner of the International Horn Society Composition Contest, virtuoso division.
Catherine Likhuta was born in 1981 in Kyiv, Ukraine. She lives currently in Australia.
